How to Use Email Header to Trace Email

People that use the internet leave a trail behind them wherever they go. To view these tracks, or "footprints" as they are called, you will need to locate the internet protocol address, which is known as the IP address. You will need an email and an online IP tracker.

To track or trace an email origin, you will need to specify which email you want to trace in your inbox. If you are using a different browser than Yahoo, the directions will vary just a bit, but you will be able to find your way.

On the message window, look in the bottom right corner to find the tab "full header". For other browsers, this tab may appear in the top right corner. Once you have the appropriate window open, use your mouse to select the "full-header" tab. Once this tab is opened, you will be able to see a lot of information that pertains to the message. When you reach the text within the message, this will be the email header.

Once you're in the header, you will need to locate the line that provides information concerning an x-originating-IP. This line will usually contain an address in the form of abc.de.fg.hi. in numerical form. Make a note of the address by writing the information on a piece of paper or notepad. This IP address is the information that you need in order to find out where the email came from.

Once you have the IP address, you will need to choose a program that will enable you to verify the IP address. Once you provide the program with the required information, the program will provide you with detailed information such as, state, city, country, postal code and the type of internet service that was used.

It is important that you take the time to find the specific information that you are seeking and protecting yourself and your computer at the same time. You can use these types of programs as many times as you would like to find out where an email originated.
